Techniques for Tuna Success

Offshore tuna fishing is a whole different ballgame from your typical pier or inshore trips. We'll use a mix of methods to put you on fish. They make blistering runs and fight all the way to the boat. We tend to find them around offshore islands and kelp paddies, often mixed in with the tuna schools. Yellowtail in the 15-30 pound range are common, but bigger specimens pushing 40+ pounds aren't unheard of.

Dorado (Mahi-Mahi): When the water warms up in late summer and early fall, we sometimes encounter these beautiful fish. Also known as dolphinfish (though they're not related to dolphins), dorado are famous for their acrobatics. They'll leap and tailwalk across the surface, flashing brilliant blue, green, and gold colors. While they don't get as big as tuna, a 20-pound dorado will give you a fight to remember – and they're absolutely delicious if you decide to keep one for dinner.
